“Junior, you know the bible just as much as I do. You have an anointing on you; you know that, almost every great man in the bible was flawed and God still used them. So, I’m not trying to hear that. When it’s my time, I will step up. God hasn’t told me it’s my time yet.” Edem patted his brother’s hand.
“If you were me, what would you do?”
Edem could see the anguish on his brother’s face. “I would repent, of course, and confess to my wife, tell her about the baby. But, before you do that, pray about it. Do a Jacob and confess who you are to God. Lacey is not going to leave you. Shoot, she might already know. Lacey is not a dumb woman, she just loves you a lot.”
“You think she knows?” Junior’s eyes got wide in fear.
“Junior, I love you brother, but you can be dumb. Don’t you know that woman has been covering you all this time? Do you really think Sheila is the first to get pregnant? I know for a fact Lacey took those women to the abortion clinic herself. Didn’t you find it weird how some of these women just disappeared?”
“She killed them?” Junior whispered.
Edem busted out laughing. “No, crazy! She paid them off and sent them on their way. All for you, brother, so they couldn’t taint your precious image.” Edem picked up his glass and chugged his smoothie.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yep.”
“How do you know all of this?”
“Ask me no questions, I’ll tell you no lies.” Edem smiled.
“Aight, brugh, brugh.” Junior stood. “Give me a hug, man.” He helped Edem up and the brothers embraced. “I love you, man.”
“Yeah, I know. I’m just so freaking lovable,” Edem joked. “Nah, I love you, too, man I just want you to get it together.”
“I’m going to try. I want to be like you when I grow up,” Junior teased.
“No, sir, there’s only one Edem.”
“You need anything before I go?”
“Junior, I’m not a baby. I can make it down the steps if I need to.”
Junior threw his hands in the air. “Aight, aight, I was just trying to help.” He left Edem alone with his thoughts.
Edem opened his laptop and, once again, the words flowed from him. And, when the title was spoken into his spirit, Edem screamed, “Yes!” He scrolled to the beginning of his document and wrote, HOW TO BE A GODLY MAN IN AN UNGODLY WORLD. Staring at the screen, Edem smiled and looked up toward the ceiling. “Thank You, Father.”
Chapter 6
Elisea was being hit doggy style by her bae. She screamed out in pleasure as he pummeled inside of her. She let all of her inhibitions down and enjoyed the loving that she received. With every thrust, he smacked her on her butt cheeks. He would pull back to watch himself go in and out of her.
“Who’s your daddy?” He pounded in her hard.
Elisea didn’t answer, so he went harder. She screamed, and finally said, “You.”
“You feel so good, baby, I’m about to cum.” Bae unloaded inside of Elisea, and they collapsed on the bed.
Elisea rubbed her hand over her back and looked at it. She looked over at her bae with a confused look on her face.
“What?” Bae asked, putting his arms behind his head.
“Ummm, there’s nothing on my hand.”
“Yea, I know.”
“So… Where is it?” Elisea’s eyes widened as she spoke.
“Oh, I didn’t pull out this time.”
Elisea jumped up. “What! Why? What is wrong with you? We talked about this!” Elisea screamed at him at the top of her lungs.
“Calm the hell down. You were feeling so good; I just bust one. It’s not that serious!”
“What? It’s not that serious? We talked about this, I cannot get pregnant.”
“You’re buggin’, Elisea.” Bae turned his back to her and got comfortable to get some rest.
Elisea hit him on his side. “Don’t turn your back on me when I’m talking to you!” she screamed. Within a blink in the eye, she was back-handed so hard that she was knocked off of the bed. She hit her head on the bottom edge of the dresser when she hit the floor. “Ssssssss.” Elisea grabbed the back of her head. She couldn’t believe what had just happened. She gathered herself together and went into attack mode. Like a wild animal, she jumped on the bed and attacked him with all her might.
“You crazy broad, what the hell is wrong with you!” he screamed, trying to block her blows. Growing up with four brothers, Elisea could hold her own against any man. “Hey, stop, you’re acting crazy.”
Elisea continued swinging, blow by blow; hitting him in the head, jaw, and nose. When her fist connected with his nose, she heard a crack and blood squirted down his face, getting all over her fist.
“You broke my nose!” He jumped up and grabbed the towel off of the back of the chair. “Get the hell outta here, you crazy bitch!”
Elisea got off the bed in tears and picked up her clothes. As she bent down to put on her pants, he grabbed her by her hair. “Ouch! Let go of me.” She tried to break loose from his grasp, but his grip was too tight on her hair. Elisea screamed as she could feel her roots being pulled.
He dragged her down the hallway naked. Her clothes crumbled in her arms. He opened the door and threw her out of his apartment. “Get the hell out of here!”
As the door slammed in Elisea’s face, she looked around to see if anyone was in the hallway. Embarrassed beyond belief, she quickly dressed and realized she didn’t have her purse or shoes. She beat on his door and rang his door-bell. “Give me my purse and my shoes!” Elisea screamed over and over again. Finally, the door opened, and she was hit in the face with her Michael Kors bag and her flats fell at her feet. As tears streamed down her face, Elisea walked pass the nosey neighbors who walked out to see what all the commotion was about.
Elisea made it to her car and cried her eyes out. “God, is this my punishment for being disobedient? God, I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Please, forgive me.” Elisea beat on her steering wheel until her hands hurt. She pulled off, not knowing where she was going. She couldn’t go home looking a wreck. Mama Eloise would grill her for sure. Before she knew it, she pulled up to Tricia and Mud’s house. Mud’s car wasn’t there and she let out a sigh of relief. She couldn’t face him, either.
Tricia opened the door and the sight of Elisea made her gasp. “Elisea! Oh, my God, what happened?” Elisea collapsed in Tricia’s arms crying. “Come on come sit down.” She led Elisea to the couch. “Were you raped, Elisea?” Elisea shook her head no. “Let me go get you a wash cloth.” Tricia went to the linen closet, got a washcloth, and got ice cubes from the fridge. When she returned, Elisea was still whimpering. “Girl, what happened to you?”
Elisea calmed down enough to tell Tricia the entire story from the first meeting until that day. Tricia was so shocked at what she heard. She carefully wiped Elisea’s face and tried to figure out how she could hide the bruises with makeup. She had a dark red mark on her cheek from being hit in the face with her purse. The back of her head had a lump on it from hitting the night stand. Tricia tried her best to convince her to go to the hospital. She was afraid that she might have a concussion, but Elisea was embarrassed.
She tried to make Elisea understand that God was not punishing her, but they are just consequences to her actions. Tricia gave Elisea some Aleve, and she laid down on the couch to rest against Tricia’s advice. But, not before she took pictures of Elisea, just in case.
Mud arrived about an hour later with Tricia’s latest craving. Krispy Kreme donuts. “Hey, babe, I brought you something.”
“Sssh!” Tricia jumped up to greet him. “Your sister is sleep on the couch.”
“Oh, my bad.” Recognizing the look of concern on his wife’s face, he asked, “Baby, what’s wrong?”
“Sssh! Come here.” Tricia dragged Mud upstairs to their bedroom. “We promised each other no secrets, right?”
“Babe, what’s wrong?” Mud got agitated. Tricia pulled out her phone and showed hi
m the pictures of Elisea. “Who did this?” he asked in a growl. Tricia relayed the story to her husband and he headed for the door.
“Where are you going? We only know his name.” Tricia feared the look in Mud’s eyes.
“My sister gets lost going to the mailbox. She can’t function without her GPS.”
“Yeah, but we still don’t know what apartment he lives in.”
“Oh, I’ll find out.” Mud rushed down the stairs and glanced over at his sleeping sister. As rage consumed him, he grabbed her keys off of the table and left out.
Tricia ran out after him. “Mud, don’t do anything stupid. Baby, please!” Tricia begged. Mud didn’t respond, only looked at her. Tricia knew that look. Mud was out for blood.

Eloise and Madear sat at Bernice’s bed as they did every day, praying and singing to her. They had sent Denard home to get some rest. Eloise stroked Bernice’s hand. “Come on back, come on back.”
“Eloise, she’s going to come back. I believe that with all my heart,” Madear told her.
Eloise shook her head. “I pray.”
“And, that’s all you can do, baby, is pray. How’s my baby, Edem, doing?”
“Oh, he’s so much better. He’s so strong, just like his daddy. He never complains, but he stays in his room typing away. He said the Lord laid a book on his heart.”
“My God! Whew! That boy is anointed. He is destined for greatness. Remember I told you that when he was still in your womb?”
Eloise smiled, thinking back. “You sure did. You said, baby, I love all your boys, but this one is destined for greatness.”
“Yes, I did!” Madear laughed, leaned back in her chair, and smiled. “I have always steered you right, correct?”
“Of course.”
“Do you trust me?”
“Madear, now you know good and well that I trust you. I trust you with my whole heart. Where is this going?” Eloise gave her friend a suspicious look.
Madear rubbed her hands together. “Come on a double date with me.”
“Say what?”
“Girl, you are not deaf. Come on a double date with me. My friend has a friend, and he wants to take you out.”
Eloise waved her hand at Madear. “You sound crazy.”
“No, you are crazy! Edem and Ruthie will probably get married. Lizzie and James are definitely headed for marriage. And Elisea, well, she’s going to do her thing, that’s for sure. And, what are you going to do? Run around meddling in everybody’s life because you don’t have one of your own? Eloise, you used to be so much fun, girl, you acting like an old lady.”
“I am old, Madear, and you’re old, too, friend.”
“Lies you tell! I’m not claiming that. We did our job, we raised our kids and their kids. Live a little.”
Eloise’s curiosity got the best of her. “Well, what he look like?”
“Remember first Sunday, the men that joined the church?”
“Yeah, we had a lot of people that day.”
“One had on a grey Steve Harvey suit and the other had on a brown one?”
“Yes, because Lacey tapped me, and said, ‘Mama Eloise, look at him in that grey suit.’”
“That was him, his name is George Bradley. My boo had on the brown suit.” Madear laughed.
“You are a mess! Your boo? Why didn’t you tell me your friend joined the church?”
“I’m telling you now. Girl, he is a good man. He’s widowed with two daughters. One is a lawyer the other is a teacher. He wants what you want. He wants to be married again. He’s a retired vet; he stays in shape. Girl, he is just what you need. I’m telling you. And, on top of that, he thinks you are gorgeous!”
Eloise smiled. “What he say?”
“He said you lied to me, you said she was pretty. She is gorgeous! And, she’s full figured, girl, he started clapping.”
Eloise’s face turned red. “Stop it!”
“No, you stop it. They got us tickets to the new Tyler Perry play. Then, we’ll go to dinner and if you’re not feeling him, then that will be it.”
Eloise thought about it and sighed. “Ok.”
“Good, and now maybe you will get some water in that desert of yours.”
“Madear!”
________
Lilith walked into her house and looked around to make sure things were as she left them. She grunted and stomped upstairs. “Wake up!” she screamed, starling Jezebel in her sleep.
“When did you get out?” Jezebel wiped her sleepy eyes.
“What difference does it make? You sure as hell didn’t get me out,” Lilith huffed.
“I was trying, Ma.” Jezebel sat up in the bed.
“Mmmhmm.” Lilith rolled her eyes and stormed out of the room.
“Where you going?” Jezebel hollered after her.
“To wash this jail cell off of me, what do you think?” Lilith slammed the bathroom door.
Jezebel shook her head. “How on earth did she afford that bail?” She reached for her phone and called Delilah. It went straight to voicemail. Jezebel sucked her teeth. “Dee, why didn’t you tell me you were getting mama out? And, where the hell are you? Why won’t you answer the freaking phone or call me back? Ugh!” Jezebel threw her phone on the bed.
She did not want to be around her mother and deal with her attitude. Jezebel slipped on her shoes and eased down the steps. She heard the shower stop and quickened her pace. As soon as she turned the knob and opened the door, Delilah was n front of her covered in blood.
Jezebel gasped, grabbed Delilah into the house, and slammed the door.
"Ma!" Jezebel’s scream caused Lilith to appear.
"What?" From the top of the stairs, Lilith could see Delilah standing there looking almost in shock. Lilith ran down the steps. "Girl, what happened to you?"
Delilah stood there in a daze. Blood splatter covered her face and her dress was soaked in blood. Lilith searched her to see if it was her blood.
"It's not hers, Ma." Jezebel and Lilith sprang into action, and stripped Delilah naked. Jezebel ran upstairs and got Delilah's robe from her room.
"Dee! Dee!" Lilith tried to get her daughter to communicate with her. Lilith looked into her eyes and they were blank. She took Dee into the living room and sat her down in the chair.
"Dee, talk to me! What happened?" Jezebel's pleas feel on deaf ears. Lilith stomped out of the room and went upstairs. "Dee!" Jezebel whispered, "Talk to me!"
"Yeah, hurry up, we got to get her out of here before the police come knocking on the door. Aight, bye."
Jezebel turned to face her mother. "Who is that?"
"Don't worry about it. Just help me get her upstairs so we can get her in the shower."
"Then what?"
"Girl, will you stop asking me questions? Damn! I can't think with you talking."
Jezebel huffed, but helped her sister up the stairs into the shower.
Chapter 7
Mud had just knocked on the third apartment door on his man hunt to no avail. Before he got to the next door it opened, and when Mud saw his face he knew it was him. His broken nose bandaged up. Mud flew into a rage. Knocking him back into his apartment, the door slammed behind them.
"Nigga!" he shouted, being caught off guard.
Mud straddled him as he threw blow after blow. As the fight ensued, it looked like a WWE match. Mud was in beast mode. His opponent was thicker in weight, but Mud with his six feet one frame and one hundred and eighty five pounds held his own. Mud had him by the throat.
"You lucky I don't kill you!" As Mud’s hands tightened around his neck, he thought about his wife and baby. Mud growled like an animal before beating his head into the floor on final time. He stood up and kicked him as hard as he could. He laid there and Mud hawked spit on him. The glob landed on his forehead and slowly dripped down his face. Mud got the hell out of dodge before someone called the police.
He called Tricia as soon as he got into his car. He calmed her nerves, but told her it
was best that he calmed down before arriving home. As he was pulling off he passed Jezebel in the car. As their cars passed each other, their eyes made contact. Jezebel had a shocked look on her face and Mud mean mugged her. I know that wasn't her mother next to her. Mud called Eddie to warn them that he was pretty sure Lilith was out.
Mud pulled up to his mother’s house. He knew she spent most her time between the hospital and at Eddie’s helping out with the baby. He let himself in using Elisea’s key. He searched the house on the lookout for Lizzie; her car was in the driveway. Hmmm, she must be out with James. Mud made his way upstairs to Edem’s room. Without knocking, he busted in the room.
Edem was at his desk typing away at his laptop. He looked up at Mud like he was crazy. Noticing the bruises and blood on his hands, Edem sighed, “What have you done?” Mud went straight into the bathroom and washed his hands. Edem hopped on one leg into the bathroom and got some peroxide out of the cabinet. “Let me see.” Mud sat down on top of the toilet as Edem tended to his wounds. “So, what does the other guy look like? And, why did you lose your temper this time, Mud? Somebody look at you the wrong way?” Edem looked at his brother and shook his head.
“Nah, man, this cat put his hands on Elisea.”
“What?” Edem’s high yellow face instantly turned red. “Where is she? Is she ok?” Edem finished wrapping Mud’s hand.
Mud got up, walked back into Edem’s room, and sat on the edge in the edge of the bed. Edem hopped into the room and took a seat in his lazy boy. He wringed his hands together and tried to calm down. Mud pulled out his phone and showed Edem the picture Tricia showed him. Then, he told Edem how he took Elisea’s car and knocked on doors looking for the dude. Edem rubbed his forehead. As much as he did not like losing control, when it came to the safety of his sisters, he was about to lose it.
“Did you kill him?” Edem shot a glance at Mud.
“Nah, I didn’t kill him. I wanted to, though. Edem, I mean, I really wanted to. This man done stole her virginity and then he puts his hands on her? Tricia said Elisea tore his ass up, though. But, I couldn’t let that go. She was still sleep when I left. Tricia is going to try to keep her there before I get back so she doesn’t even know that I took her car. But, baby brugh, I had him by his throat. I thought about it, I’m not even going to lie.”
