  Chapter 1

“I’m sorry, there is nothing else we can do,” the ER doctor said as he entered. Screams erupted and filled the waiting room.

Eloise fell to her knees, and cried out to God, “No! God, please, don’t take my baby.”

Junior and Mud rushed to their mother’s side as tears streamed down their faces. Elisea and Lizzie held hands, and prayed silently as they cried. Lacey and Tricia held on to each other as they cried. Ruthie buried her face in her hands and sobbed. Madear and Denard cried silently as they watched the family’s reaction.

“Doctor, can I see my brother?” Junior asked.

The doctor had a perplexed look on his face. “Your brother? I’m here for the Watkins family.”

“Oh, God! Oh, God! My sister is dead!” Denard screeched at the top of his lungs.

Madear covered her mouth to muffle her scream.

“Wait a minute, hold up. Ms. Watkins is not dead. As I was saying, we’ve done all we can do, but she is in a coma. She hit her head pretty hard and now it’s up to her.”

Madear jumped up. “Hold up, doc, Bernice isn’t dead?”

  “No, ma’am, she’s not.”

“Sir, how long have you been a doctor? You don’t just walk into a waiting room and start off with we did all we can do. What is wrong with you?” Madear was in the doctor’s face wagging her finger. “I have draws older than you. How insensitive can you be?”

  “I apologize.”

“You need to apologize! You better be glad I’m saved because I would give you a what for!”

Junior and Mud helped Eloise up off of the floor. “My son isn’t dead?”

“Ma’am, I don’t know who your son is, but I can check for you. What is his name?”

“His name is Edem Blanks. He had a motorcycle accident and we’ve been waiting on an update from his surgeon,” Mud barked at the doctor.

“I’ll be right back.” The doctor tried to exit the room quickly because he wasn’t sure how physical the people would get.

“Doctor! What about Bernice? When can we see her?” Madear asked, shooting the doctor a nasty look.

“She’s in ICU. You can see her now, follow me.”

“Denard, you go and I’ll go in later,” Madear ordered. Denard gathered his things and followed the doctor out of the room.

Eloise paced back and forth, uttering a prayer.

“Can you believe that doctor, brugh? I was two seconds off punching him in the face,” Mud fussed.

“Calm down, Mud, don’t upset, Mama.” Junior tried to calm him.

“I’m with Mud on this one. I was about ready to hit him with my bible,” Madear said. Everyone turned and looked at her. “What? It would have been in the name of Jesus.” Everyone busted out laughing.

“Madear!” Lacey called out. “I forgot you were gangsta.” She chuckled.

“Look! Eddie’s on TV!” Elisea said. Everyone quieted down and listened intently to the newscast. News 2 was interviewing Eddie and Officer Hudson about the baby Faith’s kidnapping.

Eloise grabbed her chest. “Oh, my poor child. Lord, I can’t take much more of this. I need You to move right now.” Eloise cried out. Madear sat down next to her and comforted her, “Now, Eloise, you know that He knows just how much you can bare. Stay strong in your faith, baby.” Madear held her tight.

Madear pulled out her cell phone and made a few calls. She walked back and forth as she talked on the phone. “We need all prayer warriors crying out to God. Our church family is under attack. This is spiritual warfare. This is a war cry, everyone needs to get on it, now!”

Ruthie wanted to help and started making calls of her own. James felt helpless watching Lizzie and the Blanks’ in so much pain, and he called all the deacons. Within minutes, most of the congregation of First Assembly was praying.

  ________

Another doctor entered the waiting room. It seemed as if everyone held his or her breath. A deafening silence swept through the entire waiting room. “Blanks family?”

“Yes, doctor.” Junior and Mud stood up.

“I’m Dr. Crenshaw, Edem is out of surgery. Are you mom?” The doctor looked at Eloise. Eloise nodded, and Dr. Crenshaw sat down next to her and held her hand. “His heart stopped twice during surgery, but we were able to bring him back.” Eloise grabbed her chest again. “Calm down, we revived him. His ribs are broken and his lung was punctured, but we repaired it. He also broke his left leg. I know that sounds like a lot, but he’s resting comfortably. He’ll be here for a while, but he should be fine.”

“Doctor, are you sure? You said his heart stopped twice,” Eloise asked.

“I’m sure he should be fine. When we took his helmet off, he had a picture of his family taped inside and a scripture, the 23rd Psalm. I was told by admission that he is a pastor. I’m a Christian, also, and I pray before I lay hands on any patient,” Doctor Crenshaw explained.

“Praise God! Look at God! See, Eloise! God’s got it under control,” Madear told her.

Eloise grabbed the doctor’s hand. “Thank you so much, doctor.”

“You are more than welcome. Come with me and I will show you to his room.” Doctor Crenshaw got up and held his hand out for Eloise.

Eloise started to cry and Madear walked over to her. “No, ma’am, no tears. Look at me! God has answered your prayers, now you walk boldly in your faith and lay hands on your child.” Madear’s voice was stern and serious. Eloise heard Madear in her heart, nodded her head, and followed the doctor out of the waiting room.

Junior, Mud, Lizzie, and Elisea followed close behind.

“I’ll call Eddie with the news,” Lacey told Junior. He nodded in agreement.

“We usually only allow a few people in the room, but I’ll make an exception just this once. But, make it quick, the nurses on this floor are very diligent. He’s pretty drugged up, so don’t be too concerned if he doesn’t respond,” Doctor Crenshaw explained.

“Thank you, doctor.” Junior put his hand out to shake his hand.

The family entered the hospital room. Eloise gasped at the sight of her baby boy all banged up. She walked over to him and kissed him on his cheek.

“Hey, baby boy,” Eloise said in a soft voice. She smiled as she stroked his hair. “He looks so helpless.”

Junior stood on the other side of Edem’s bed and kissed his forehead. Mud held his brother’s hand. Lizzie and Elisea stood at the foot of his bed.

“Mama, we should pray before the nurses come and make some of us leave,” Lizzie said.

“You’re right.” Everyone linked hands and Eloise began to pray, “Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You with thankful hearts. The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but You are the author o
f fate. Lord, I gave You my child soon after he came out of my womb, and tonight You have given him back to me. They said his heart stopped twice and You allowed it to keep on beating. Just like Lazarus, You rescued him from the evil snares of the enemy. Lord, I thank You. If I had ten thousand tongues, I still couldn’t thank You enough. I’m thanking You in advance for supernatural healing, for You know the work he has to do. And Lord, please watch over the newest member of our family; baby Faith. Lord, bring her safely home to Eddie and Felicia. Lord, I know she is in Your hands and no harm will come to her, and that she is protected by the blood of Jesus. I thank You in advance for restoring this family as a whole. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.”

“Amen,” the Blanks clan said in unison.

“I want to wake him up so bad,” Elisea whined as she rubbed his foot.

“Mama, remember when we would get sick, you and Daddy would always sing to us?” Junior asked.

  Eloise smiled. “We sure did.”

“Well, I think this as good of time as any,” Junior said.

  Eloise cleared her throat.

Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus

  Just to take Him at His word;

Just to rest upon His promise,

And to know, “Thus saith the Lord!”

The Blanks clan all chimed in,

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!

  How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er;

  Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!

Oh, for grace to trust Him more!

  Chapter 2

Eloise and the girls stayed behind at Moses Cone Hospital with Edem while Junior, Mud, Lacey, and Tricia headed over to Women’s Hospital to be there for Eddie. Security was tight and Eddie had to have a police escort to allow them in the hospital.

Felicia was so wrecked in emotional pain that they had to drug her up to calm her down. She sat in her bed and rocked with red, puffy, swollen eyes. Her mother stood by her side, trying to comfort her. Lacey and Tricia hugged Eddie, and went inside the room to be there for Felicia.

Eddie embraced his brothers when they reached him in the hallway. He had been strong for Felicia, but broke down during their brotherly embrace.

“We’re going to find her, brugh, brugh,” Junior told him.

“If I could get my hands on that Tamar, I would choke the life out of her!” Mud barked.

Junior gave him a look. “That’s not helping, Mud.” He shook his head at his brother.

“I’m just saying. I feel helpless, Junior,” Mud explained.

“I know we all do, but we can’t go around choking people,” Junior tried to explain. “Eddie, how is Felicia holding up?”

“Man, she’s a wreck, she blames me for bringing crazo into our lives. And, I can’t even be mad because it’s the truth. It is my fault, it’s all my fault.”

“Booty make you do strange things, Eddie. We are all guilty of that. Edem tried to warn us about those Harlot sisters, but we didn’t listen.” Mud put his arm around Eddie.

  ________

Tamar left out of a neighborhood corner store and got back in the car. She looked down at the floor-board of the passenger seat at baby Faith sleeping peacefully. She added minutes to the track phone she had just purchased. Her head was spinning and she didn’t know what to do next. She hadn’t planned it out that far. She called her mother’s cell.

  “Hello?”

  “Mother?”

Recognizing her daughter’s voice, Lilith whispered, “Tamar, where are you? The police were here with a search warrant. Why did you take that baby?”

“I don’t know! They don’t deserve to be happy after the way they treated me!”

“Tamar, dump that thing at a fire station or something and bring your butt home.”

  “Mother!” Tamar whined.

“Don’t mother me! Either kill it and dump it by the side of the road or leave it somewhere. Either way, you need an alibi. I’m glad you had sense enough to turn your phone off. Ugh! Make up your mind and make a decision.”

“Stop screaming at me! You’re making me nervous!”

“How long have you been off your medicine? We can admit you into the hospital. You’re having a psychotic break, Tamar.”

“You’re the one who took my medicine from me!” Tamar whined.

“Well, I was supposed to know you would steal a damn baby! I told you to give them hell, not be Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction!” Lilith fussed.

  “Where are my sisters?”

“Don’t worry about them. They can handle themselves. Now, where are you?”

Tamar looked around at her surroundings. She was dazed and confused. “I’m in Burlington.”

“Burlington! Meet me in the parking lot of the Maxway. Mother’s coming!” Lilith hung up the phone on her daughter.

Lilith growled as she went into the garage and grabbed the duct tape, shovel, and trash bags. “These girls are going to be the death of me! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!” Lilith grabbed her purse and car keys.

  ________

Officer Hudson sat in an unmarked car across the street from the Harlot household. He knew that they would eventually make a move. He tossed a few sunflower seeds in his mouth and cracked them open. He sound of the garage door opening made him sit up straight. He took the once empty water bottle now filled with sunflower seed shells and spit the remaining shells into it.

Lilith pulled out of the driveway and headed down the street.

“Alright, lady, take me to the baby,” Officer Hudson said as he pulled out after her. He followed her out of Greensboro City Limits. “Where are you taking me?” Officer Hudson parked across the street and pulled out his binoculars to get a better view of the parking lot of Maxway. He recognized Tamar’s car.

Lilith pulled up next to Tamar. She jumped out of her car and grabbed Tamar out of the driver’s seat. Tamar looked like a wild woman as her mother yanked a knot in her. Lilith slapped the taste out of Tamar.

“You idiot! Do you know how much trouble you have caused?”

  “I’m sorry, Mother!” she whined.

“Oh, shut up! Now, give me the damn baby! Where is it?” Lilith growled.

“Ssh! I just got her to sleep.”

“I don’t give a damn about that thing! Just hand her over so I can get rid of her.” Lilith attempted to move Tamar out of the way.

“Get rid of her? I decided I want to keep her.”

Lilith looked at Tamar as if she was crazy. With her hand on her hip, Lilith shouted, “You decided, huh? You fool! You can’t raise a baby! Now, give me the damn thing!”

“No!” Tamar shouted back. “She’s mine!”

Lilith slapped Tamar again and they began to tussle. Lilith ran around the car and grabbed the baby from the floor-board. Tamar clawed at her mother and tugged on baby Faith. She cried as the women tugged over her little body. They were so engrossed in their tug of war that they didn’t notice they had company.

Officer Hudson and Officer Aaron pulled up on both sides of Tamar’s and Lilith’s cars, blocking them in. Luckily, Officer Hudson called for backup from the Burlington Police Department. They jumped out of their cars and pulled their weapons. Lilith gasped as she saw the officer with a gun pointed after her. Not caring about the baby, instead of letting go, she flung the baby’s legs, causing the baby to fly into the back seat. Tamar screamed at the sight of her baby being thrown.

  “My baby!”

Officer Hudson slammed Lilith’s head against the hood of the car and put her in handcuffs. It took everything in him not to use his taser on the evil woman.

Officer Aaron had his hands full with Tamar losing her mind in front of him. He quickly read her, her rights and handcuffed her. After throwing her in the back of his police car, Tamar screamed and kicked at the windows.

Office Hudson placed Lilith in the back of his unmarked car and called for a bus. They heard the ambulance in the distance. He drew a quick breath and said a silent prayer before reaching in the back seat to check on the ba
by. He lifted baby Faith from the floor-board of the passenger seat to see she was still and her color had faded.

“Dear God, I need some help here,” Officer Hudson prayed as gave baby Faith mouth to mouth.

Officer Aaron waved his arms and directed the ambulance.

Officer Hudson kept doing CPR. “Come on, baby, breathe for me!” Beads of sweat formed on his head as he thought about having to tell his friend, Eddie, that he was too late to save his baby girl.

“We got her, move out the way,” the EMS worker said, but Officer Hudson wouldn’t stop. They tried to pull him off of her, but he shook them off.

Thoughts of his own child ran through his mind. His wife was due in a month. Officer Hudson screamed, “Jesus!” at the top of his lungs and as he blew breath into baby Faith, she let out a soft cry. “Yes!” Officer Hudson finally moved out of the way so that EMS could take over.

Officer Aaron patted Hudson on the back. “Good job!”

As more police cars pulled up, they took Lilith to the station. Officer Aaron called from her car, “Look at this,” holding up the shovel, duct tape, and trash bags. “Hudson, your timing saved that baby’s life.”

The officers looked at each other and realized the magnitude of the situation. Tamar had exhausted herself and stared out the window, trying to figure out what was going on as she watched the EMS rush off with baby Faith.

“My baby,” Tamar cried as the ambulance disappeared out of sight.

As the officers stood around talking, Officer Hudson got in his car and called Eddie.

  “Hello?”

“We found her, she’s alive. The ambulance is taking her to the hospital, so come meet us at Alamance Regional Medical Center. Eddie, you hear me?” All he heard was heavy breathing on the other end.

“Ugh, ugh, yeah! I’m on my way,” Eddie said in shock and awe.

“Man, who is there with you?”

“Junior and Mud are with me.”

“Put one of them on the phone.” He explained to Junior what was going on and that Eddie seemed so out of it, he didn’t trust him driving. Junior agreed and said he would see them soon.
